The changes in Roman tactics

Meanwhile, in Rome, it became clear the Republican system of annually elected magistrates didn’t work at war. Fabius Maximus Cunctator was restored to power together with the aggressive Marcus Claudius Marcellus. They became known as the ‘Shield and Sword of Rome.’ Rome was recovering. Up to that point, the Carthaginians had killed over 70,000 Romans in a short period of just three years. But by 212 BC, a new army of 200,000 Roman soldiers in Italy, Sicily, and Spain was ready to confront Hannibal. Approximately 50,000 men were positioned only to stalk Hannibal’s army, which was hugely outnumbered. The Romans had the mission to restrict the Carthaginians’ progressing and suppress those who joined their side. The Romans were determined to win this war.

Hannibal’s movements in Italy were restricted, and Rome’s army won some great victories attention. Marcellus regained Roman control over Syracuse in 211 BC, and soon after that, over entire Sicily, but got killed in 208 in Italy by another of Hannibal’s surprise attacks. It felt like victory for the Carthaginians, so they made a major attempt to strengthen Hannibal’s army. A relief force led by Hannibal’s brother Hasdrubal came close but was crashed at the River Metaurus in 207 BC. Hasdrubal was murdered and his head thrown into Hannibal’s camp. Meanwhile, decisive events were taking place on another front – in Spain.
